Farm cyclist dies in accident

A 66-year-old cyclist is dead and a minibus driver is in custody after an accident at Herstelling Public Road yesterday.

Dead is Basil Rambarran a labourer of Farm Squatting Area. According to a statement from the police at 16:45 minibus BLL 4739 driven by a 44 year old resident of Soesdyke Back Road, was proceeding south along the western lane of the eastern carriage way when a pedal cyclist allegedly rode across the road from west to east and collided with the front of the vehicle.

The cyclist, Rambarran, fell onto the road surface and sustained injuries. He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. The body is at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination which will be done today.

The minibus driver whose alcohol level was found to be exceedingly above the legal limit has since been arrested and is assisting with the investigation.
