Veteran journalist and former Stabroek News reporter, Nills Learmond Campbell passed away yesterday in the United States where he had been living with his family.
He was 73 years old.
His son Shirwin told Stabroek News that his father took ill shortly after Hurricane Irma battered the Tampa, Florida area where they are living. He related that Campbell had recovered from a stroke several years ago but still had hypertension issues. His health took a turn for the worse when his blood pressure skyrocketed following the hurricane.
He was rushed last week to a Tampa hospital but succumbed at around 4am yesterday.
Campbell, who worked in the media for over 50 years, was employed with many of the past and current newspapers and broadcast media outlets.
The Guyana Press Association yesterday extended condolences to Campbell’s family. “Nills was a polite man; an astute journalist who paid attention to detail and language use. He never ceased sharing his knowledge and experiences with his colleagues and friends, especially the younger ones,” GPA Executive Member, Denis Chabrol said in a brief comment.
“The GPA extends sincerest condolences to his family and thanks them for contributing to the life of a very good Guyanese journalist,” he added.
Campbell is survived by his wide Inderdai Dorothy Campbell, four children and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
