Ship labourer remanded over attempted murder

An alcohol-infused argument and fight has left one man in the hospital fighting for his life, and another charged with attempted murder.

Thirty-five-year-old Jermaine Mc Donald is accused of wounding Mario Gomes, on October 8, at Kumaka Waterfront, Mabaruma, with intent to murder him.

Mc Donald, a labourer on a ship, was not required to plead to the charge.

Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that the complainant is in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). He added that on the day in question, the two were consuming alcohol when an argument developed, causing the accused to arm himself with a bottle and lash the complainant to the left side of his head. As a result of the hit he suffered, Gomes, fell unconscious and was rushed to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital and later taken to GPH for surgery.

The prosecutor then objected to bail being granted, citing the fact that the accused works on a ship which is frequently in and out of Guyana.

McDonald’s attorney told the court that her client ought to be granted bail given the fact that he has two young children and that he would present himself to court whenever his matter is called.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently remanded the accused and adjourned the matter to November 21, at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
