A police officer was on Wednesday faced with five charges, including causing the death of pedestrian Anastacia Kerr by dangerous driving and driving under the influence.

Lance Corporal 17329 Williams, a resident of Cumming’s Lodge and who is attached to the police force’s headquarters, appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magis-trate’s aaa.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on September 17, at Ogle Public Road, East Coast Demerara, he drove motor vehicle PSS 3984 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Kerr. He was granted his release on $150,000 bail in relation to the charge.

Williams also denied two other charges, driving under the influence and driving a tinted vehicle without a permit, for which he was released on his own recognisance.

He did admit to driving an uncertified motor vehicle and driving an unlicensed vehicle and was fined a total of $25,000 for those two charges.

Kerr, 20, a sales girl of Lot 5 Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara, died after she was struck down while attempting to cross the Ogle Public Road.

The lance corporal was placed under close arrest following the accident. At the time, he was driving his personal vehicle.

The police, in a press release, had said that investigations revealed that the lance corporal was proceeding east along the southern side of the northern carriageway of the public road when the woman ran into the path of the vehicle.

After she was struck, Kerr was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she died while receiving medical attention.

The police had said that while the rank was proceeding within the stipulated speed limit at the time of the accident, he was found to be above the legal alcohol limit.

The court proceedings were adjourned until November 24.
