Constable shot by colleague during chase of robber – police

A police constable is currently nursing a gunshot wound to his right hand after he was ‘accidently’ shot by his colleague yesterday afternoon while pursuing a robbery suspect in Charlestown.

Constable Fraser, who is stationed at the Brickdam Police station sustained a gunshot wound to his right arm. He remains a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) up to last evening. His condition is listed as stable.

The incident occurred around 3.30 pm yesterday at Leopold and Breda streets, Charlestown.

In a brief statement, the police said that Constable Fraser was “accidently shot by one of his colleagues during the pursuit of a robbery suspect”.

While the details surrounding the incident are unclear, Stabroek News understands that the police were responding to a report that the robbery suspect was seen riding a bicycle in the area.

As a result, they were dispatched to the location and while pursing the suspect, the rank who was armed reportedly tripped and the firearm went off.

Two rounds was discharged one of which struck Fraser.

Investigations are ongoing.
