People must raise their voices against the attack on the Cheddi Jagan Research Institute

Dear Editor,

The vicious attack on the Cheddi Jagan Research Institute housed at Red House has brought the PNC-led APNU+AFC regime to a new low. It reveals the vindictiveness, narrow mindedness and pettiness of those that occupy the seat of government today.

Cheddi Jagan was not just a national figure who stood at the centre of political, economic and social struggles in colonial British Guiana and stood like a bulwark in opposition to dictatorship and for democracy. He was also an important figure in international affairs. Red House was his home from 1961 to 1964.

That this regime has decided to attack his legacy in such a callous way is an indication of the direction in which they want to take our country. At the same time they talk about social cohesion. Indeed they have set up a department in that name. This latest action is further confirmation that the term ‘social cohesion’ is being used as a mere smokescreen to hide their policy of discrimination.

All decent minded, freedom loving and democratically inclined persons must raise their voices against this outrage. Let us stop this regime from taking our country down the path of oppression and dictatorship.

Let your voices be heard now.

Yours faithfully,

Donald Ramotar

Former President
