Alarm at BV GTT office is nightly nuisance

Dear Editor,

I live in Granville Park, Beterverwagting. Next door to me there is the BV GTT branch office. For the past 10 days a GTT alarm has gone off several times during the night.

At first the alarm went off every night between 8pm and 10pm, it would last for approximately four minutes and stop. Since it was only going off once or twice and would stop, it was not that much of a nuisance. However this got progressively worse until the alarm was going off every hour during the night.

On Friday  (23rd June, 2017) I tried to call the GTT BV office but there was no number listed (the listed number takes you to customer care) so I called the Georgetown operator. The operator listened to my plight, I asked for a number for the BV office but instead the operator put me on hold and tried to contact someone from that branch herself. She came back on the call and was very apologetic; she indicated that she had spoken to a supervisor at the BV branch and they indeed had an alarm that was going off and it was reported by the security personnel at the location. She further stated that they were unaware that the alarm was so loud that it was affecting residents and assured me that this problem would be addressed right away and there would not be a recurrence to which I thanked her.

However, that same night the alarm went off all night as usual. Editor, at that point I had not slept in two nights. On Saturday I braved the rain and visited the BV office, I was only able to speak to the security at the gate; she listened to my complaint and then tried to call an extension but told me there was water in the line and could not get through. I offered to have her use my cellphone but she said it was an extension she had to call. I indicated to her that if this noise recurs that night I would have no choice but to write a letter in the newspapers. I left my name and phone number with her but I have received no response thus far.

On Saturday night I made the decision to sleep by relatives since I simply could not handle another sleepless night. My husband, who stayed home indicated that the alarm went off all night again. First at 9:30pm, then 12:30am, then 1:30am. Editor, I am desperately asking you to publish my letter in the hope that the relevant GTT personnel will read it and remedy this grossly unacceptable situation.

Yours faithfully,

Trudy Sahai
