Government should waive VAT on education before new term starts

Dear Editor,

The Government of Guyana should waive VAT on private education with immediate effect. With over fifty per cent failures at the 2017 National Grade Six Assessment we must recognize that our education system is in a critical condition. This is not a time to be taxing children’s education. This tax is placing additional burdens on hard-working parents who seek a better future for their children. It is downright shameful for the government to be paying residential rentals of $500,000 per month for a minister while children’s education is being taxed. As the 2017-18 school term is about to commence many parents will have to dig deep into their pockets to pay school fees. I call on the APNU+AFC government to waive the taxes before the commencement of the new term.

Yours faithfully,

M Craig
