Serena Williams has 23 grand slam titles not 20

Dear Editor,

I refer to the article entitled ‘The magnificent Serena Williams’ in the Saturday, July 1, 2017 edition of your newspaper.

While I found the article very interesting, there are two errors I must point out.

  1. Serena has 23 grand slam titles and not 20. For the record she also has 14 grand slam doubles titles and 4 Olympic gold medals in singles and doubles.
  2. It was Venus Williams and not Serena Williams who was called a “gorrilla” by an ESPN commentator. This happened at the Australian Open last January. The commentator, in his defence, said he meant “guerrilla”, a testament to Venus’ fighting qualities. ESPN nevertheless sacked the commentator.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Bender
