Saudi authorities should be commended

Dear Editor,

I read with interest a BBC news report which stated that the Saudi King Salman has lifted a ban on women from driving. This is indeed a progressive and forward looking move on the part of the Saudi authorities and must be commended.

This move was long overdue and represents a victory for all women and women advocate groups both in Saudi Arabia and the world at large. Driving in today’s world is not a luxury to be enjoyed by a privileged few, but a necessity especially in modern and industrialized countries.

As traditional societies give way to a new and modern way of life, many of the basic assumptions of life and living will be challenged. This tension between tradition and modernity is both understandable and inevitable and in keeping with the laws of dialectics where the only constant is change.

Yours faithfully,

Hydar Ally
