Voice of ABC brings measure of comfort

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank US Ambassador Perry Holloway for his statement on the impasse created by President Granger’s unilateral appointment of the chairman of GECOM.

We have a large Guyanese Community settled here in Queens, New York. And, frankly this appointment has raised our anxiety levels several notches. It is not just the manner in which the appointment was made, namely, outside the procedures laid down by the constitution, but it is largely due to the history of fraudulent elections in Guyana – all perpetrated by PNC governments of the 1960’s – 1980’s. The last thing this country needs is another fraudulent election.

The voice of the ABC and EU countries commenting on this matter – no matter how neutral – brings a measure of comfort to all the scores of thousands of concerned Guyanese people who live abroad. We know the ABC & EU folks are watching – and feel reasonably confident they will not allow another fraudulent election to take place in our native land.

For this we thank Mr Holloway. My thanks also are now extended to the Canadian High Commissioner Ms. Chatterjee for her statement on this matter published in SN. Please stay involved.

Yours faithfully,

Mike Persaud
