Franklyn/Britton capture Open doubles title

National men’s singles champion Christopher Franklyn and fellow national senior player Shemar Britton Sunday won the Open doubles category when the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) staged its doubles, novices and fundamental challenge competitions at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Franklyn/Britton defeated Donald and Jamaal Duff 3-1 in the final.

After dropping the first game 6-11, Franklyn/Britton reeled off the next three games 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 to take the top prize.

In the semi-finals Franklyn/Britton defeated the number three seeds Joel Alleyne and Trenace Lowe 3-1 while the Duff pair ousted the number two seeds Nigel Bryan and Elishaba Johnson in five games after being 0-2 and 8-10 down in the third game.

Lowe/Alleyne and Bryan/Johnson were joint third.

In the mixed doubles final, Alleyne/Lowe defeated Bryan/Priscilla Greaves 14-6, 11-6, 11-7 and 11-8.

The joint third place winners were Britton/Candace Mc Kenzie and Natalie Cummings/Miguel Wong.

In the junior doubles final, Nicholas Romain/Tyriq Saunders defeated Terrence Rausch/Jamal Nicholas 11-8, 8-11, 12-10 and 13-11.

Johnson/Greaves and Wong/Niran Bissu were declared joint third.

The male novices competition, which attracted some 24 entries, saw Karl Nedd of the Table Tennis Academy (TTA) defeating Buxton Table Tennis Club’s DeAndre Gordon 11-4, 11-2, 13-11.

Joint third place winners were Curtis Mc Rae of the East Bank TT club and Trevor Vangerderen of Linden.

The female novices competition attracted some nine entries and was won by Tirishatha Semple of the Table Tennis Academy who defeated Nkechi Mc Rae (East Bank TT Club) 11-4, 11-9 and 11-9.

The joint third place winners were Shania Barrow (Linden) and Tatyana Mohamed of the East Bank TT Club.

The Pre Cadet doubles category attracted 11 entries and was won by Kaysan Ninvalle and Isaiah Layne who defeated Jonathan Van Lange/ Dhanesh Persaud 11-7, 11-9, 11-6 in the final.

The joint third place finishers were Christopher Barrow/Curtis McRae and Kristian Sahadeo/Colin Wong.

In the fundamental challenge section, the winners of the three minute rally in the pre-cadet category were Van Lange and Layne with a total of 111.

Sahadeo/Wong with 99 rallies placed second while third place went to Thuraia Thomas and Shania Barrow with 43 rallies third.

The winners in the junior fundamental challenge three minute rally were Johnson and Greaves whose total was 142 while Salenas Jackman and Neveah Clarkston with 131 rallies placed second.

The senior fundamental challenge winners were Jamaal Duff and Clarkston with a total of 178 rallies while Franklyn and Britton placed second with 158 rallies and Dwain Dick and Natalie Cummings third with 145 rallies.

The presentation of prizes will take place today from 5pm at the same venue.
