Badree, Matthews miss out on finals after semi-final losses

BRISBANE, Australia, CMC – Neither West Indies stars Samuel Badree nor Hayley Matthews will feature on finals day of the Australia Big Bash League after both players tasted defeat for their respective franchises in the semi-finals here yesterday.

Playing at the Gabba, leg-spinner Badree had little influence as his Brisbane Heat suffered the agony of losing to Sydney Sixers on the one-over eliminator in the men’s encounter.

All-rounder Matthews also had minimal impact, failing to score as Hobart Hurricanes crashed to a heavy 103-run defeat to Sydney Sixers.

In Saturday’s finals, Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers will vie for both the men and women’s titles.

West Indies leg-spinner Samuel Badree.

Asked to bat first in the men’s final, Heat rattled up 167 for nine with New Zealander Brendon McCullum top-scoring with 46.

Badree, batting at number 11, finished six not out.

In reply, Sixers got 64 from captain Moises Henriques and 46 from opener Daniel Hughes, to ensure scores were tied at the end of the 20 overs. They looked like taking an outright victory with six needed off the last over but failed to get the required runs.

Badree, once again handed the new ball, finished with one for 32 from his four overs.

In the super over, Henriques then blasted 22 runs to put the game out of Heat’s reach.

There was similar disappointment for Matthews who watched as Sixers rallied to 169 for six off their 20 overs, with captain and opener Alyssa Healy top-scoring with 77, Sara McGlashan scoring 38 and South African Marizanne Kapp hitting an unbeaten 36.

Matthews claimed one for 30 from her three overs of off-spin.

In reply, Hurricanes were bundled out for 66 off 14.1 overs, wrecked by South African leg-spinner Dane van Niekerk who finished with three for 15.

Opener Erin Burns top-scored with 14 and was just one of three batsmen in double figures.

The right-handed Matthews was fourth out at 27 in the sixth over, lbw to 19-year-old off-spinner Ashleigh Garner (2-9) to the fourth ball she faced.
