Dorsett Road Race, Family Fun Day on today in Berbice

Police youth clubs in Berbice are expected to play major roles when the seventh annual Desmond Dorsett Memorial Road Race Classic and Family Fun Day takes place today.

The event, organised by the Dorsett family of Leeds, Corentyne Berbice, in memory of the late Desmond Dorsett, one of the top detectives in Berbice, during his career, will be held at various venues on the Corentyne and is expected to attract the cream of young athletes Berbice.

According to a press release, some of the young athletes are members of the various police youth clubs in B Division.

Speaking to the media, coordinator Waveney Dorsett stated that she had a successful meeting with Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam and his top brass including Deputy Commander Errol Watts and sub divisional Officers of the three police subdivisions, and received a full commitment from the force that they will be a part of the day’s activities.

Yesterday she told Stabroek Sport that because of the weather they might have to cancel the Fun Day.

Levi Nedd, former national volleyball player has also given a commitment that the Guysuco Training Centre will participate in the day’s activities.

The activities will get underway from 8am with a three category road race. The categories are Open male and female athletes, U19s and U15s.

The Open male and the U19 athletes will cover a distance of five Km, beginning at the No 43 village, while the U15 athletes and the females will begin their event at the No 47 village. The event will end at the popular No 53 Sports Complex Corentyne.

Attractive prizes which will be presented to the top finisher in each category.

Prizes include cash incentives, trophies, T-shirts, ribbons and other memorabilia.  Certificates of appreciation and participation will also be presented to all participants.

Following the road race a fun-day will be held at the No 53 Sports Complex beginning at 10am and will include athletics, softball cricket, volleyball, football, circle tennis and dominoes.

A number of novelty events and ring games are also expected to be a part of the day’s programme.

Proceeds from the day’s activities will go towards charity.

A native of East Canje, the late Superintendent of Police Dorsett worked mostly as a detective during his tenure with the Guyana Police Force. He was an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sporting activities including cricket and athletics.

Dorsett migrated after retiring and returned with his family from time to time to do charity and community work.

His wife Waveney, a retired head mistress and community activist continues in the same vein and is the spearhead of the activity.
