National Park rugby field to be upgraded

-says Director of Sports Christopher Jones

Director of Sports Christopher Jones says that plans are in place to upgrade the National Park rugby playing field although he could not yet say as yet how much was to be spent on the project.

Following the inaugural Guinness V11’s one day tournament at the National Park rugby field on Saturday, Jones briefly informed the media that the National Sports Commission (NSC) will resurface the playing area and install lights at the venue.

He went more in depth yesterday.

According to Jones, work on the facility will commence in the first quarter of this year.

“The installation should begin within the first quarter should all the necessary arrangements be satisfied,” he told Stabroek Sport in an invited comment.

Jones said he could not give any information with respect to the cost of the upgrade.

“The cost for the installation is not currently known since it’s a collaborative effort with the National Parks Commission (NPC) as such we are awaiting the park engineer with those estimates.

“The rugby ground was chosen since it’s the only rugby field readily accessible to the Guyana Rugby Football Union and also is in keeping with government’s agenda to enhance and upgrade play fields across the country.”

Jones said the planned lights will also be used for other activities in the park.

“These lights will cover the entire field for the benefit of rugby as well as the benefit of other small sporting activities that use the field from time to time. It is important to note that we have recognized that community grounds are most often used after 5pm and later into the evening and the addition of lighting would greatly increase its usability.”
