GABA looking to implement slate system for upcoming AGM

Despite the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) announcing that it plans to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers in March the association is yet to receive a formal correspondence from any prospective nominee said incumbent president Junior Hercules.

Hercules, who declared his desire not to seek re-election during an earlier exclusive interview with Stabroek Sports said yesterday: “No one has formally signaled their intention. If I remember correctly, when I accepted that I was running for office, it was a week before the actual election because when I contacted the then President [Michael Singh], he was in the same position that I am in now.”

Colts Basketball Club President and Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Vice-President Michael Singh has stated that he also has no intention of returning to the post.

This position was made known during a recent interview with Stabroek Sports published in February.

“What usually happens is that President or parties or members generally would reach out to whomever would have signaled interest,” Hercules added.

Asked about the format that will be utilized to conduct the elections he revealed:” I have gotten approval from the current executive members to make that amendment. It will now say that if the President is elected, their entire slate will be selected.”

In the previous electoral congress, each position was contested but according to Hercules: “Each nominee will have to submit their own slate and essentially, you are only electing the President. It is incumbent for persons to provide details of their officers that will be part of the slate.” Quizzed about the timeframe for the submission of slates, he declared “I think the constitution says two weeks, so I looking at mid-March. I will send out something in the first week of March. I will commit at best to the third week in March [for the elections] and an official notice will be sent to the clubs. They will have that period and possibly have the election on the 19th of March”.

Asked if he would seek if no candidates step forward, Hercules affirmed “I would act in an interim capacity until the association finds someone”.
