Essequibo Female Cricket Team was brushed aside by a strong Berbice unit by a massive 278 runs in the first game of the Female Inter County One-day at the Everest Cricket Club Ground, yesterday.

Fans were robbed of female cricket action after the Berbicians ruined any inclination of a Cinderella story being scripted as the Essequibians were humiliatingly dismissed for 15 in the pursuit of Berbice’s 293 for 4. Eva Giddings (5-9) and Tremayne Smartt (3-6) only needed 6.1 overs to complete an impressive all-round day for the Berbice unit.

Earlier in the day, Essequibo won the toss and elected to bowl. They soon regretted that decision as they were sent to all parts of the ground by an experienced Berbice side which  chalked up 293-4 from their allotted 50 overs.

Player-of-the-match, Melanie Henry stroked an even 50 and got good support from Shabika Gajnabi (48) and Sheneta Grimmond (47). Essequibo’s bowling efforts were led by Estel Lewis (1-36) and Althea Newark (1-37).

The tournament continues tomorrow, with Demerara facing Essequibo at the same venue.

The final round is set for Sunday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground.
