Defending champs seal quarter-final spot

On a night of must win encounters, defending champions Bent Street, Sparta Boss, North-East La Penitence and Tucville were among the teams to seal quarter-final berths when the Petra Organization Futsal Championship group stage concluded on Thursday.

Bent Street defeated Sophia 4-2 in front of a mammoth crowd at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue. Konata Manning tallied a double in the 20th and 22nd minute whilst Colin Nelson and Joshua Browne netted in the eighth and 26th minute respectively.

Sophia, who had already sealed their place in the next round prior to the start of the match, were on target in the 16th and 21st via Dwayne Lowe and Joshua Kamal correspondingly.

Losing finalist of the inaugural edition, Sparta Boss edged Tiger Bay 4-2. Devon Millington registered a hat-trick in the 10th, 16th and 24th minute. He was assisted by a ninth conversion from Sheldon Shepherd.

For Tiger Bay, Deon Alfred and Alpha Fletchman scored in the fourth and 21st minute correspondingly.

North East La Penitence brushed aside West Back Road 7-1.

Calvin Moore bagged a hat-trick in the first, third and 18th minute of the must win fixture, while Omallo Williams scored twice in the fifth and 29th minute.

Shaquille Browne and Romario Andrews added to the rout with goals in the second and eighth minute respectively. For the loser, Jorell Tyrell netted in the 25th minute.

Tucville squeaked past Gold is Money 3-1 compliments of goals from Jermin Junior, Dennis Edwards and Jahaal Greaves in the fifth, 12th and 14th minute respectively.

For the West Front Road based unit, Carl Tudor netted in the 10th minute. In other results, Back Circle and Broad Street Bullies punched their respective tickets to the quarterfinal section. Back Circle raided Agricola by a 5-0 scoreline.

Stephon McLean bagged a brace in the 22nd and 26th minute while Akeemo Anthony, Curtez Kellman and Selwyn William scored in the 12th, 13th and 25th minute apiece.

Similarly, Broad Street Bullies crushed Albouystown by an identical margin. Darren Benjamin recorded a hat-trick in the 10th, 21st and 27th minute while Kevin Cummings netted a double in the 11th and 17th minute.

The quarterfinal section will commence on Tuesday at the same venue. Back Circle will oppose Broad Street Bullies, Bent Street will engage Gold is Money, Tucville will battle Sophia and Sparta Boss will oppose North East La Penitence.

Winner of the tournament will collect $400,000 and the championship trophy while the runner-up will pocket $200,000 and the corresponding accolade.

The third and fourth place finishers will collect $100,000 and $50,000 respectively and the respective accolade. The event is slated to conclude on April 15th.
