Jets edge Kwakwani to win LABA U23 competition

An Akini Wilson layup in the dying moments propelled Amelia’s Ward Jets to the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) U23 title, edging Kwakwani 70-68 in the final on Saturday.

Wilson, following a Kwakwani turnover, nailed a clutch layup with 15.2 seconds remaining and the score tied at 68-68 at the Mackenzie Sport Club MSC Hard-court, to settle the outcome.

The eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final with 23 points in the win was Wilson while Vibert Benjamin, Keison Butters and George Yearwood assisted with 17, 12 and 10 points respectively.

For Kwakwani, the MVP of the tournament Troy David recorded 18 points. He was assisted by Leonard Primo and Domar Gladstone who scored 13 and 10 points respectively.

Meeting the teams prior to the start of the fixture were Linden Mayor Carwyn Holland and Region #10 Regional Executive Officer, Gavin Clarke.
