Wiltshire in easy win on opening night of national junior squash c/ships

Two-time junior Caribbean squash champion, Shomari Wiltshire hardly broke a sweat on the opening night of the Woodpecker Products junior national squash championships at the Georgetown Club squash court, last evening.

Wiltshire, who was cool in his approach, employed several drop shots to dispose of Jason Gomes in straight sets [11-1, 11-1, and 11-2] to begin the tournament on a high in the boys’ under 15 category.

Other major wins went to Caribbean junior silver medalist Kirsten Gomes who defeated Aliyah Persaud in straight sets. Gomes, though, went down to favorite for the girls under 15 category Makeda Harding 3-11, 4-11 and 9-11 pushing Harding down to the wire during the final set.

Young and upcoming Abosaide Cadogan and Madison Fernandes also had their way on the opening night after defeating Teija Edwards and Jahcinta Adams respectively in straight sets both only dropping a single point in their final sets.

The other winners were Louis Da Silva, Mohryan Baksh and Nathan Rahaman in the boys under 11 category while Ethan Jonas, Michael Alphonso, and Demetrius De Abreu notched up wins in the boys under 13 games. Gianni Carpenter and Samuel lnce – Carvalhal and Lucas Jonas got wins in the boys under 15 division. Harding took the final and her second game of the evening when she defeated Edwards in straight sets.

The championships which will be used select Guyana’s junior squash team to compete in the upcoming Junior Caribbean will continue tonight at the same venue.
