Archer spell helps put Sussex on the verge of innings victory

LONDON, CMC – Outstanding Barbadian seamer Jofra Archer snatched a four-wicket haul to help push Worcestershire towards defeat on the penultimate day of their County Championship match at Hove here yesterday.

The 22-year-old finished with four for 91 as Worcestershire, resuming the day on 139 without loss, were bowled out by Sussex for 312 in their first innings.

Following on by 267 runs, the visitors ended the day on 124 for four, still 143 runs shy of avoiding an innings defeat.

There was no sign of the collapse to come when opener Daryl Mitchell struck 121 and Brett D’Oliveira, 80, as they extended their first wicket stand to 215.

South African seamer David Wiese removed both to initiate the collapse as three wickets fell for nine runs to leave Worcestershire on 224 for three.

They recovered to reach 260 for three but Archer then scythed through the middle and lower order as Worcestershire lost their last seven wickets for 52 runs.

Archer was supported by South African fast bowler Vernon Philander who claimed three for 72.

Batting a second time, Worcestershire were comfortably placed at 90 for one before Barbados-born England seamer Chris Jordan struck twice in successive overs as three wickets tumbled for 25 runs.

At Headingly in Leeds, veteran former West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul failed to rescue Lancashire as they went down by 10 wickets to Yorkshire.

Resuming the third day on 43 with the visitors on 141 for four, Chanderpaul added only four before becoming the second wicket of the day, caught at the wicket off seamer Ben Coad.

Lancs lost their last six wickets for 64 runs to be all out for 209.

Yorkshire then easily overhauled their modest victory target of 60.
