National volleyball teams gearing up for international assignments

Guyana’s national male volleyball team is set to participate in the five-country Suriname International invitational tournament from June 23 – 27.

Guyana will play alongside the hosts, Trinidad and Tobago, French Guiana and the Netherlands (Holland) in what is expected to be a highly competitive tournament.

The locals for some time have been absent from the international circuit but national coach Levi Nedd believes that his side’s chances are as good as any, pointing to the international experience of a number of prospective players on the team.

“We are looking to take 14 players across there [Suriname] to participate in a sponsored Suriname tournament with four other countries. Our hopes are very high because we have a number of players who would have had international exposure so we hope to do very well there,” Nedd said.

Nedd, who has been acting in the capacity of the national coach for over two decades, indicated that Guyana has been a strong unit over the years.

“We’ll have to see until we get there,” when asked whether the team can come away winners.

The coach, though, expressed optimism of a rekindling of interest in the sport among the locals in light of the recent international invitation.

Meanwhile, Guyana is also set to field an U19 male and female team to participate in the Inter – Guiana Games set for August.

The squad for all three teams will be announced shortly after which, according to Nedd, they will be encamped to heighten their skills and techniques for the various assignments.
