Riverview gets by Plantain Slice on penalty kicks

Riverview will oppose Campbellville while Police will engage Potaro Strikers in the semi-final of the inaugural Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Bartica Zone following quarterfinal wins on Saturday.

Played at the Bartica Community Centre Tarmac, Riverview edged Plantain Slice 1-0 on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time ended 2-2.

Lucius Edwards and Andel Norton pushed the game into the penalty kick realm, finding the back of the net in the 23rd and 28th minute respectively to level the match.

Edwards slotted home from the right side after collecting a left side pass. Norton equalised after stealing the ball off the final defender and calmly rolled the ball into the net.

Earlier, DeVill had given Plantain Slice the lead in the fourth minute scoring down the centre of the goal after collecting a left side pass.

LaRose doubled his team’s advantage in the 17th minute with a powerful shot from just over the halfway mark into the right corner.

Campbellville reached the semis by edging Almanac Kings 2-1. Marvin Jacobs opened the scoring in the 14th minute for Campbellville finishing into the left side of the net following a three on one situation.

Marvin Bamfield made it 2-0 in the 25th minute, slotting home into the empty net unchallenged, after racing onto a pass.

Ricardo Perreira scored a consolation goal three minutes onward lashing a powerful effort from the right side into the left corner.

er hand, Police arrested All-Stars 1-0. Mark Boyce found the back of the net in the 33rd minute, striking the ball with the outside of his right foot from the left side, into the right corner.

Meanwhile, Potaro Strikers crushed Ballers 3-0. Trevor Fraser broke the deadlock in the sixth minute with a goal from the right side while Devon Spencer netted in the 14th minute, placing his effort into the lower right corner, during a one-on-one situation with the final defender.

Three minutes later Spencer netted his second via a powerful right foot strike from the right side into the center of the net.

In the preliminary round held earlier, Potaro Strikers downed Lazio 3-2.

Spencer, Jermin Joseph and Morris Waddell scored in the 21st, 24th and 26th minute respectively for Potaro Strikers while Alex Alsey and Jade Huggins netted in the 13th and 19th minute for Lazio.

Ballers defeated Impact 3-0 with goals from Mark Richards, Shaqueel Hopkinson and Casey Chesney in the third, fifth and seventh minute respectively.

Up to press time, the semi-finals were underway, with the resulting victors poised to compete in the final hours later.

Winner of the event will receive $350,000 and the championship trophy. They would also earned the right to represent the zone at the National Championship on July 8th.

On the other hand, the runners-up, third and fourth place finishers will pocket $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 apiece and the corresponding accolade.
