Local boxers could compete in J/ca versus Guyana series

The Jamaica Boxing Association (JBA) has expressed interest in hosting local amateur boxers in October to compete in the third edition of the ‘Jamaica versus’ series.

Following the success of Jamaica versus the Cayman Islands and Jamaica versus Panama, the powers that be from the ‘Land of Wood and Water’ needed a sterner test, the best in the Caribbean.

Said President of  JBA, Stephen Jones “Those two successful events set the stage for what will be the most electrifying night of all when Caribbean powerhouse Team Guyana visits the shores of Jamaica in October. Guyana has been excelling in sports right across the board and boxing is certainly no different as they have been churning out Caribbean champions on all levels and have proven themselves the nation to measure yourself against.”

In the release, Jones added, “The idea is to give our national boxers the much-needed competition against different styles of fighters from the strongest of boxing nations.”

Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle told Stabroek Sport yesterday, that his association will be pulling out all the stops to ensure that a formidable team represents the Golden Arrowhead come October.

A takeaway lunch is planned for August 6 as a means of raising funds to help offset the sojourn.

The GBA head then disclosed that “one of our priorities is to expose Jason ‘AK47’ Barker at that competition.

Barker who is a model inmate incarcerated at the Camp Street Penitentiary is the Caribbean’s heavyweight champion.

Ninvalle concluded that “Jamaica has always supported us in boxing and we will support them.”
