Nedd to lead Guyana in Regional U17 tournament

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) on Friday released the names of the 14 – man squad which will participate in the 2017 West Indies Regional Under-17 tournament.

The squad, along with manager Nazeer Mohamed and Coach Orin Bailey, yesterday morning, departed for the Twin-Island Republic for the tournament which begins on Tuesday and runs until July 18th.

The team will be led by left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd who believes that his side has all that it takes to land Guyana its first Regional Under-17 title.

“I think we have a great opportunity to go out there [Trinidad] and make Guyana proud by winning the tournament for the first time,” Nedd told Stabroek Sports, yesterday morning before the team departed.

Guyana, as Nedd hinted, does have a fair chance of winning the tournament which will require the likes of Alex Algoo, who is pugnacious at the top of the innings and dependable Kevlon Anderson, to lead the team’s batting charge.

The bowling, on the other hand, should take care of itself with skipper Nedd, fellow left-arm spinner Kelvin Umroa and seamer Qumar Torrington, expected to do the bulk of the damage for the South Americans.

Guyana will open their campaign against the Windward Islands on Tuesday.

Full squad: Alex Algoo, Sachin Singh, Orlando Jailall, Junior Sinclair, Kevin Christian, Kevlon Anderson, Lance Roberts, Alphius Bookie, Ashmead Nedd, Pradesh Ballkishun, Gevon Schultz, Reyaz Khan, Qumar Torrington, Kelvin Umroa
