Alves, Rahaman win as Digicel Senior National Squash C/ships commence

Adams Alves and Javed Rahaman won their matches in the Open men’s singles competition as the 2017 Digicel Senior National Squash Championships got underway Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club Courts.

Both players won their matches in four games. In the opening match Rahaman outlasted Steven Xavier winning 12 – 10, 4 – 11, 11 – 6, 11 – 9 while Alves defeated Douglas De Groot 11 – 8, 8 – 11, 11 – 6, 11 – 6.

In the  men’s 35 – 49 years category,  Khalil Alli won in straight games over Allan Downes 11 – 6, 11 – 6, 11 – 9  while  Joe Mekdeci defeated Medhi Ramdhani 11 – 1, 11 – 8, 11 – 5.

In the lone men’s over 50 match David Fernandes showed better court coverage in his win over Robin Low 11 – 9, 11 – 6, 11 – 6.

The tournament continued yesterday from 6.00 pm with round of sixteen matches in the men’s Open, first round matches in the women’s Open and more round robin matches in the veteran categories. The tournament ends Saturday.

Guyana’s world ranked player Nicolette Fernandes will be contesting the men’s Open competition along with the women singles category where Ashley Khalil is the defending champion.
