National U17 b/ball team loses fourth match at CentroBasket tournament

Guyana suffered its fourth consecutive loss in the Central American & Caribbean Basketball Championships (CentroBasket) U17 Tournament, going down to Jamaica 57-81 in the 5-8 playoffs yesterday in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Kevon Wiggins continued his scoring streak with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists while Nigel Bowen supported with nine points and as many rebounds.

The next best scorers were Akeem Crandon with seven points and 10 rebounds and Jermaine King with six points and six rebounds.

For the Jamaicans, Jalen Menzies led the way with 20 points and four steals, while Kareem Reid tallied a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Supporting were Daimar Dyall-Roberts, who added 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Marco-Miche Downer who tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.

Jamaica seized control of the contest as the first period ended 23-11. Guyana battled back in the second quarter, reducing the deficit marginally after outscoring Jamaica 15-14 to trail 37-26 at the halftime interval.

However, Jamaica maintained their dominance in the third period, netting 24 points to Guyana’s 11 to enter the fourth period comfortably ahead at 61-37.

Jamaica completed the easy win in the final period as both teams netted 20 points.

The top three teams from the tournament will qualify to the FIBA U-18 Americas Championship in St Catharines, Canada from June 11th-17th 2018.
