Western Tigers secured the top spot in Group-B of the Corona Beer Invitational Football Championship, edging Guyana Police Force (GPF) 2-1 on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
The West Ruimveldt unit opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Dwayne McLennon netted. McLennon raced onto a through pass before dribbling the central defender and finishing past the goalkeeper into the back of the net.
However, the lawmen equalised in the 42nd minute through Anthio Wallace. The speedy forward lashed his effort into the back of the net after a poor clearance by defender Linden Pickets, swathe ball falling into his path.
Western Tigers recorded the winning goal in the 71st minute compliments of a Phillip Rowley penalty conversion.
Meanwhile, GFC clinched the second position in Group-B, downing Beacons 4-1. Benjamin Opara bagged a double in the first and 66th minute while Alberto Da Santa and Dwayne Roberio netted in the 22nd and 53rd minute apiece.
For Beacons, Quason McAulay scored in the 34th minute.
Santos scored the most goals of the round defeating Eastveldt 8-0. Kacy John recorded a second half helmet-trick in the 51st, 62nd, 78th and 88th minutes, while William Europe recorded a brace in the 24th and 63rd minute.
Adding to the score line in the 26th and 90th minute were Sherwin Skeete and Lionel Holder respectively. The quarterfinal round will commence on Friday at the same venue.
Group-A winner Northern Rangers will oppose Camptown at 19:00hrs, while Western Tigers will battle Pele FC at 21:00hrs. The second of quarterfinal matches will be staged on Sunday September 3rd.
At 19:00hrs, GFC will oppose Riddim Squad, while GPF will battle Santos at 21:00hrs.
