Jordan hundred, Archer all-round fireworks put Sussex in charge

HOVE, England,  CMC – Chris Jordan smashed a career-best hundred and fellow Barbadian Jofra Archer an equally entertaining half-century, as Sussex dominated Nottinghamshire on day two of their Division Two County Championship match here  yesterday.

Jordan struck 147 while Archer chimed in with 72, knocks that propelled the hosts up to 565 all out in their first innings.

Wicketkeeper Michael Burgess, unbeaten on 67 overnight, stroked 146 to help enforce Sussex’s dominance.

For good measure, the outstanding Archer returned with his right-arm seam to pick up two wickets and leave Notts stumbling at the close on 108 for five – still 457 runs behind heading into Wednesday’s third day.

Resuming the day on 230 for five, Sussex lost Bermudian left-hander Delray Rawlins without adding to his overnight 55 but the England all-rounder Jordan, Burgess and then Archer all stepped up to take the initiative away from Notts.

Jordan blasted 17 fours and three sixes off a mere 168 deliveries, as he gathered his second first class hundred. Along the way, he added 189 for the seventh wicket with Burgess who counted 19 fours and two sixes off 198 balls in a maiden first-class hundred.

When Burgess fell, Archer joined Jordan to put on a further 96 for the eighth wicket, striking seven fours and two sixes in an 84-ball cameo.

With the half-century – his fifth of the campaign – Archer surpassed 600 runs in what is his first full County season. He has 609 runs.

Jordan, meanwhile, passed 400 runs to be on 419.

Part-time off-spinner Billy Root (3-29) and seamer Steven Mullaney (3-60) finished with three wickets apiece.

Archer then produced an impressive burst with the new ball, claiming opener Jake Libby without scoring in the second over with two runs on the board and also accounting for Rikki Wessels for one, as Notts crashed to 65 for five.

Root, on 31 not out and Chris Read, unbeaten on 13, were left to prop up the innings in an unbroken 43-run, sixth wicket stand.

Archer now has 60 wickets for the season.
