Fruta Conquerors were crowned the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) ‘Big Four Champions’, edging Elite League winner, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 1-0 Sunday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Mercurial winger Eon Alleyne was the difference on the night in front of a small crowd as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 13th minute.
A Solomon Austin interception of a GDF pass, initiated the goal as the center-half played a through pass to Alleyne down the middle of the field.
The forward, upon racing onto the ball, dribbled an onrushing defender, before thumping his effort across the body of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
It was the fourth conversion for Alleyne in the event following his hat-trick performance during the 5-1 semifinal win over Victoria Kings. It was also the second consecutive win for the Tucville unit against the army outfit.
Due to the result, Fruta Conquerors will pocket $1,500,000 and the championship trophy while the GDF will receive $700,000 and the respective accolade.
Rising Star, Jeremy Garrett during a post-match comment said, “It was an extremely intense game, it was a close battle and was never a one-sided game.”
He added, “The last 10 minutes were especially tough, the army kept running at us, but the backline of Solomon Austin, Delon Williams, Joshua Browne and I held up against them.
“Everyone played well, even players on the bench like Dwayne Lindy came off and gave us that fight. It is a very good result for the club,” he added.
Meanwhile, Buxton United edged traditional rival Victoria Kings 1-0 in the third place playoff. Keveron Durant scored in the 33rd minute.
With the win Buxton United will collect $500,000 and the respective accolade while the losers will receive $300,000 and a trophy.
The tournament comprised the two four finishers in the Elite League second season.
