Thomas, Amsterdam clash set to highlight Terrence Ali National Open boxing c/ships

The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will bring its curtain down on its calendar of activities for 2017 on November 30 with the staging of the Terrence Ali National Open Championships at the National Gymnasium.

The last statutory event of the season will be a prerequisite for selection to the national team that will compete at the Caribbean Championships to be held in St Lucia from December 13-16.

During the three-day fixture, 10 gyms, including the recently-formed Savannah Boxing Gym from Lethem, will be gunning for top honors. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) gym took the overall spoils last year.

One of the talking points of the event has been the possible rematch involving standout middleweights, Sgt. Dennis Thomas from the Guyana Police Service and Desmond Amsterdam of the Guyana Defense Force.

Amsterdam is a gold medalist at the Caribbean Championships which were held in Barbados last year while Thomas was a silver medalist at the championships staged here in 2015.

Other noteworthy pugilists billed to enter the squared circle are Colin Lewis, Jason ‘AK 47’ Barker, Keevin Allicock, Joel Williamson and Diwani Lampkin.

Bell time is 19:00hrs with a nightly admission of $500. See you there.
