Camptown upsets Police to win Turbo knockout tournament

Camptown FC won the inaugural Turbo Energy Drink knockout football tournament after upsetting the Guyana Police Force (GPF) 1-0 Sunday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.

Although it was a clash that will be remembered for the poor quality of the officiating than the exploits of the respective players, veteran midfielder Troy Prescod settled the contest following a scoreless first half, with a 78th minute ‘Olympic Goal’ conversion.

Awarded a right sided corner-kick, the left-footed Prescod delivered a perfect cross which curled into the top right corner of the net, stunning the sizable crowd that descended on the venue to view the clash.

The only blemish on the night for the dogged Camptown unit occurred in the 86th minute when Jamal Codrington was shown the red card for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity with his arm, just outside the centre of the penalty box.

Camptown earned the first prize of $500,000 and the championship trophy while the runners up will pocket $250,000 and the runners-up trophy.

Meanwhile, Pouderoyen needled Grove Hi-Tech 1-0 to clinch the third position and earn $125,000 and a trophy.  Defender Alex Softleigh scored in the 34th minute.

Grove Hi Tech will receive $75,000 and a trophy for placing fourth.

The event was coordinated by the Petra Organization.
