Updated: Two soldiers to be charged over alleged Anna Regina rape

The police have received legal advice to charge two Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldiers who are accused of sexually assaulting a woman and robbing her partner at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground last Saturday evening.

This was confirmed by Divisional Commander Khali Pareshram, who when contacted for an update yesterday told Stabroek News that the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended that the duo be charged.

They are expected to appear in the Suddie Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The police today named the soldiers as Rawlston Reid, 22, of Dochfour Housing Scheme, E.C.D and Isaiah Rawlins, 21, of Wisroc, Linden.

Stabroek News had previously reported that the couple was liming at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground when they were attacked around 10.30pm.

The GDF in a release had said that the soldiers who are attached to the 6th Infantry Battalion, Anna Regina were subsequently placed under close arrest.

Reports had revealed that the soldiers allegedly approached the couple and instructed the woman to perform a sexual act on her partner. She refused and the men allegedly sexually assaulted her.

During the attack her partner offered his valuables to the perpetrators in the hopes of not being assaulted but the men continued with their attack.

A relative of the complainants had related to Stabroek News that around 11pm on Saturday, they were awakened by the man who informed them of what had happened.  As he was relating the story, a security guard of a business next door informed them that the suspects were seen running down the road.

The relative had said that they then went to the Anna Regina Police Station and made a report.

In the process of making the report, the family pleaded with the officers to accompany them in the hopes of capturing the men.

“They said they can’t go, that they have to take the report and send it to the patrol and they will go,” the relative had said.

She had further lamented that detailed statements weren’t taken from the complainants until the following day.
