Bent St pensioner dies after being run over by car

A senior citizen was killed early yesterday after she was run over by a car while making her way to the Bourda Post Office to uplift her pension.

Dead is 72-year-old Jaclyn Joseph of Lot YY Bent Street, Wortmanville, who was dragged by the vehicle and had her left foot severed as a result.

The accident occurred around 4.30 am when a car, reported to have been speeding, hit Joseph as she attempted to cross Brickdam at the intersection with Winter Place.

The car, PLL 2838, driven by a 35-year-old labourer of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Greater, George-town, was proceeding east along Brickdam, allegedly at a fast rate. The driver was said to be attempting to beat the nearby traffic light at the intersection with Winter Place while Joseph was crossing the road.

As a result, the woman was reportedly dragged about 39 meters and her left foot was severed. The vehicle came to a halt some 158 meters from the point of impact, according to investigators.

Joseph was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel and she was later positively identified by her daughter. Shirley Joseph related that her mother was on her way to the Bourda Post Office to collect her pension.

Stabroek News understands that a breathalyser test was administered to the driver but no alcohol was detected in his breath. He remains in custody.
