Son charged with murdering mother at Annandale

Dewan Dahri, who allegedly caused the death of his mother after he set her mattress on fire, has been charged with murder.

Dahri, 43, of Lot 143 Gale Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him last week.

The charge states that he murdered his mother, Mengree Dahri, called ‘Gladys,’ 73, between December 25 and December 28.

The man was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison. He is scheduled to return to court on January 29.

Stabroek News had reported that around 10 am on Christmas Day, Dewan lit the mattress on which his mother was resting. According to the police, a resident observed smoke emanating from the bottom flat of their two-storey house and went over to check. Upon checking, the neighbour discovered the senior Dahri on a bed, which was engulfed in flames, police said.

The fire was extinguished by neighbours who responded.

After being rescued, the woman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention and she was admitted in an unconscious state. She did not regain consciousness up to the time of her death on December 28.

During interrogation, the son reportedly admitted to setting the woman’s mattress alight, police said.

Stabroek News was told by relatives that the son, who is an alcoholic, would often abuse his mother physically and verbally for money to purchase alcohol.
