Soldier admits to $5.5m gunpoint robbery – police

A Lance Corporal from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is in police custody and has confessed to robbing a Kitty resident of over $5.5M in cash and other valuables, the police said.

According to information reaching Stabroek News, around 11:30pm on Saturday, the police acting on information visited the home at Middle Road, East La Penitence, of one of the suspects, who is a Lance Corporal with the GDF.

While the man was not home, a 67-year-old female relative who was present and the police from ‘A’ Division conducted a search where they found an unlicensed pistol along with nine live rounds, five cellular phones and a motorcycle.

The relative was taken into police custody and preliminary investigations revealed the identity of the suspect, who was located and handed over to the police by his superiors.

The man admitted to committing the crime along with another accomplice who was later arrested.

On Thursday, around 3:15pm, a 34-year-old woman, who is involved in gold mining, was returning to her Pere Street, Kitty home when she was held up by two motorcycle, gun-toting bandits. The woman was allegedly followed from a location at Light and Sixth streets, Alberttown. The two men rode up to her on a motorcycle as she was about to enter her yard and the pillion rider, who was armed, demanded that she handed over her bag.

Out of fear, she handed over the bag which contained $4.9 million in cash along with a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone, a gold ankle band and documents, including her national ID and several bank cards.
