Coast Guard rank prevents students from attempting suicide at Kingston jetty

The Guyana Defence Force yesterday said a Coast Guard rank and the unit’s welfare officer managed to stop two secondary school students from attempting to end their lives at the Kingston Jetty, in Georgetown.

The GDF, in a statement, said at about 3 pm yesterday, the rank noticed the two teenagers. “The two teenagers, who were allegedly preparing to jump into the deep waters at the mouth of the Demerara River, were spotted by an observant rank, who immediately intervened with the assistance of the unit’s welfare officer,” the statement added.

The Guyana Police Force was subsequently summoned to the scene and the teens were taken into custody and handed over the Childcare and Protection Agency.

Up to last evening, efforts were underway to offer counselling to the two students.
