Suspect in fatal beating of North West woman held

A man who allegedly beat his teenaged wife during last week resulting in her death was on Tuesday evening arrested by the police.

Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan in a press release yesterday confirmed that the suspect was arrested around 8.40 pm on Tuesday at Baramita, North West District. He is presently in custody assisiting with the investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today.  Lorinda Thomas, a mother of one of Barama Line, Baramita, Region One succumbed last Thursday night, one day after she was allegedly beaten by her common-law husband during an argument.

She succumbed around 9.30 pm last Thursday while receiving medical attention at the Baramita Health Centre.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm last Wednesday while Thomas was making her way home.

Stabroek News was previously told that Thomas left her home last Wednesday afternoon to visit her family. Upon returning home later in the evening, she was reportedly approached by the suspect and an argument ensued.

The man allegedly dealt Thomas several kicks to her abdomen. As a result, Thomas passed out. She later regained consciousness and found herself lying in the grass. She managed to get up and make her way home.

However, when she woke up the following morning, she experienced intense pain in her abdomen.

As a result, she went to the community health centre, where she was admitted and kept under observation due to her low blood pressure.

Thomas succumbed while being prepared to be air-dashed to the city.
