Cummings Lodge youth may have died in road accident, autopsy find

An autopsy has determined that Hemchand Dalchand, the 20-year-old man who was discovered dead on Sunday morning along the Oleander Gardens Public Road, died as a result of injuries consistent with a vehicular accident and the police have since detained two persons for questioning.

Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan, in a statement issued yesterday, confirmed that Dalchand died as a result of multiple injuries, consistent with that of a motor vehicle accident.

The autopsy was performed yesterday morning by government pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that two persons were detained and are currently in custody assisting with investigation. One of the individuals, this newspaper has learnt, was arrested on Sunday evening while the other was arrested yesterday. They were reportedly seen arguing with Dalchand prior to the discovery of his body.

The lifeless body of Dalchand, called ‘Rakesh’, a resident of Cumming’s Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was discovered in a pool of blood early Sunday morning.

In a statement, the police had said that around 6 pm on Saturday, Dalchand left his Cummings Lodge home with several female friends to attend an entertainment show at the Ogle Community Centre Ground.

He was later discovered dead on the northern half of the Oleander Gardens Public Road with several wounds and without the jersey and footwear he was wearing when he left home.

An aunt previously related to this newspaper that Dalchand’s mother said that some of their neighbours asked for Dalchand to accompany them to a fair that was being held in the next village.

A resident later informed her that Dalchand’s body was found not too far from the fair site.

The aunt had related that the persons who Dalchand left with remained tip-lipped about the incident and had not informed his family whether anything happened to him.

Dalchand’s aunt also said that members of her family was in shock as they are finding it hard to believe anyone would want to hurt the man, who often kept to himself and “was not troublesome with anyone.”

“He is just live with his mother and she does work and take care of he and that’s it. She devastated bad and don’t know what to do now because she poor too. She don’t even know how she gon bury he, that’s what she tell me. She seh she don’t even want a wake, just to get he buried,” the woman said.
