Rape accused freed due to insufficient evidence

Jack Mangal was yesterday freed of a rape charge after Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall upheld a no-case submission made by defence attorney Maxwell McKay.

Ruling that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient, the judge ordered the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty, thereby setting Mangal free.

The indictment against him had been that he sexually penetrated a 19-year-old female without her consent on August 2nd, 2014.

The trial proceedings were held in-camera at the Sexual Offences Court of the Georgetown Supreme Court.

The state was represented by Prosecutors Orinthia Schmidt and Seeta Bishundial.
