Windsor Castle farmer shot in rice field

A farmer was shot on Monday afternoon while attending to his rice fields at Windsor Castle backdam, Essequibo Coast.

Bhagwandas Ganesh, 57, of Lot 67 Windsor Castle, sustained a single gunshot wound to his right hand.

He was rushed to the Suddie Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He was admitted and said to be in a stable condition.

While the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, Stabroek News was told that it occurred around 5.50 pm on Monday as Ganesh was making regular checks of his rice fields. He reportedly heard a loud explosion and then felt a burning sensation in his right hand. He then noticed that his hand was bleeding and then saw two men fleeing.

Ganesh then ventured out of the backdam and reported the matter to police and was escorted to the hospital.

Ganesh, this newspaper was told, reported to the police that he had no argument with anyone that could lead to a shooting.

Investigations are ongoing.
