Woman critical after being hit by taxi on Houston road

An Independence Boulevard, Georgetown woman is now hospitalised in a critical condition after she was struck by a hire car while crossing the Houston Public Road on Friday evening.

Iona France, 48, of Lot 4 Independence Boulevard, Georgetown, was crossing the road around 7.50 pm on Friday when the car, bearing licence plate HC 6412, hit her.

France sustained a broken left leg, left hand, left hip and punctured lungs.

Sunday Stabroek was told that the driver, Oswald Michael, 42, of Remus Street, Agricola, was proceeding north along the Houston Public Road.

As the car approached the Meadow Bank Public Road, France was crossing and was struck down.

France was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she remained hospitalised in a critical condition up to yesterday afternoon.

Michael, meanwhile, is in custody and his vehicle has been impounded as the police continue their investigation.
