Homeless man charged over theft from Bedford Methodist’s manse

Michael Jeffrey

A homeless man was yesterday remanded to prison by a city court after being charged with breaking into the Bedford Methodist Church’s manse and stealing $125,000 in items.

Michael Jeffrey denied the charge that between March 3rd and March 26th, 2018, at Georgetown, he broke and entered the manse (clergy house) and stole two toilet seats, valued at $80,000, two sinks, valued at $30,000, a toilet tank, valued at $10,000 and a metal chair, valued at $5,000.

Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh told Magistrate Leron Daly that Jeffrey, who was seen in CCTV footage removing the items, admitted to the theft. He noted that the articles mentioned in the charge were recovered.

Singh also objected to bail on the grounds that the accused has no fixed place of abode.

Subsequent to the prosecutor’s submissions, the magistrate remanded the accused to prison and adjourned the matter to April 4th.
