Suspected thief shot in Alberttown by unlicensed firearm holder

A suspected thief was early yesterday morning shot and injured after he allegedly broke into the storeroom of a businessman at Alberttown, Georgetown.

Vijay Singh, 43, of no fixed place of abode sustained a single gunshot wound to his right leg and is currently admitted at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). His condition is listed as stable.

Divisional Commander (ag) Leslie James yesterday confirmed the incident which occurred around 4.10am at Third Street, Alberttown.

He said the suspect, a 49-year-old businessman, who is not a licensed firearm holder was taken into custody and is assisting with investigations.

Stabroek News understands that the businessman told the police that he was browsing the internet around 3.30 am yesterday, when he heard a noise. Upon looking through his window, he said he saw Singh walking towards his gate pushing a bicycle.

As a result, he whipped out the unlicensed firearm and discharged a round which struck Singh to his thigh.

The police were alerted and upon investigating, it was discovered that the door to the businessman storeroom had been prised open and the bicycle taken out.
