Bandits kill Dominican in Cuyuni mining camp robbery

A Dominican Republic national was shot and killed early yesterday morning, when bandits invaded a mining camp at Black Water Backdam, Cuyuni River and stole a quantity of gold.

Dead is Pedro Pablo Rosario, 55, who was a miner. The attack occurred around 2 am. Details were still emerging last evening about the attack at the camp, which is owned by a Kitty resident.

The Guyana Police Force said initial investigations revealed that Rosario’s hammock was 30 feet from the dredge when one of the three suspects pounced and discharged a round, which struck him.

The suspects, the police said, then proceeded to the dredge, held the other employees at gunpoint and removed two mats from the sluice box before escaping.

A team of investigators has since been dispatched to area by the police.
