Break and enter suspect gets 18 months for escape from police outpost

A 27-year-old plumber was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to escaping from the Prashad Nagar police outpost.

Adrian Walters admitted that on April 11th, 2018, he escaped from the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost, where he was in custody for the offence of breaking and entering and larceny.

In admitting his guilt, Walters told Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman that he and an officer ended up in a scuffle and the officer was beating him and he tried to escape the beating.

However, Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore stated that on the day in question, at about 12.50 pm, Walters, who was in the lock-ups, asked to use the washroom and was escorted by a police officer. He added that Walters escaped through a door that is situated at the eastern side of the outpost and jumped the fence of the compound. He was pursued by the police officer but made good his escape. However, he was later arrested in the East La Penitence area.

In handing down the sentence, Magistrate Latchman considered the fact that Walters did not waste the court’s time and the need to prevent others from committing the offence. She then sentenced the man to 18 months in prison.
