Homeless man accused of SARA break-in and larceny

A homeless man was yesterday remanded to prison by a city court after he was charged with breaking into the State Assets Recovery Agency (SARA) and stealing almost $300,000 in electronics.

The charge against Mahesh Sarjoo, 26, is that between April 25th and April 26th, 2018, at Main and New Market streets, he broke and entered the SARA and stole a $250,000 Dell computer, two hard drives valued at $40,000 and an $8,000 headset, which were the property of Troy Bentick. Sarjoo denied the charge.

Sarjoo told the court that he never stole anything and that the police officers beat him like a dog.

However, police prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that the accused was seen on CCTV footage committing the crime.

The accused was subsequently remanded to prison by Magistrate Leron Daly, who adjourned the proceedings until May 18th.
