Third person charged over murder of America St moneychanger

A third man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of America Street money changer Shawn Nurse, also known as ‘Fabulous’, who was killed during an attempted robbery earlier this year.

The accused was also charged and remanded for a $2 million East Coast Demerara armed robbery, which took place in April.

Kacey Heyliger, 25, of 42 Shell Road, Kitty, was read a charge which alleged that on February 4, at America Street and Avenue of the Republic, while in the company of others, he murdered Shawn Nurse.

The defendant, a construction worker, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, told the court that the file in relation to the matter was complete. He also stated that two other persons were charged with the said crime. The other accused are Kerwin De Santos and George Hope, who are presently before Magistrate Judy Latchman for their Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder charge. Their PI commenced on April 11.

Heyliger was also read a second charge which alleged that he, on April 30, at Industry, ECD, while armed with a gun, robbed Troy Boodoo of $2 million.

Prosecutor Mansfield requested that this matter be sent to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court 2, where another person was charged on Wednesday for the crime.

Mansfield then objected to bail being granted, citing the fact that a firearm was allegedly used in the commission of the offence.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently remanded the accused in relation to both matters, adjourning the murder case to May 21, when it will be heard by her, and the armed robbery matter to May 22, when it will be heard at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Previous reports state that Nurse, 47, a father of three, of the South Ruimveldt Shopping Plaza, was shot once in the face, just under the left eye, at the corner of America Street and Avenue of the Republic.

The police had said that the victim was seated on a chair at the corner of America Street and Avenue of the Republic when the armed perpetrator approached him from a northern direction with the weapon drawn and demanded that he hand over his money.
