Nigg woman killed in road accident

Gaitrie Armogan, a wife and a mother of two, is now dead after she was fatally struck by a motorcyclist yesterday morning.

At the time, Armogan, also known as ‘Deso,’ 49, of Lot 180 Second Street, Nigg New Housing Scheme, Corentyne, Berbice, was attempting to cross the Nigg Public Road, in Berbice.

According to relatives, Armogan was to accompany a relative to the airport yesterday and as a result she left home around 7.30 am to head to a shop on the public road to purchase snacks for the trip.

However, after purchasing the items, the woman was struck as she was returning home with her bicycle.

Stabroek News saw surveillance camera footage, which showed that the motorcyclist, identified as Arvin Ramnarace, who was riding CH 2690, rode into the woman when she suddenly attempted to cross the road. 

Armogan, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Hospital, sustained major head injuries, this publication was told.

Ramnarace, 20, of Lot 105 Chesney Housing Scheme, also sustained in-juries. He was transferred from the Port Mourant Hospital to the New Amsterdam Public Hos-pital yesterday. According to information gathered, he is said to be in a stable condition although he was bleeding from the nose.

Meanwhile, Armogan’s husband, Gopaul Singh, 52, who is employed at the Albion Estate, told this newspaper that when he returned home from work yesterday morning, around 8 am, he was told that his wife had already left to go to the shop. He said, “Me brother-in-law wife call me and ask if she deh home and she say how somebody say one accident happen pon the road,” he said. “Me went out from the road and me see the bicycle. Me na see she. Me go Port Mourant Hospital. According to the police, them say she deh deh. When me go, she done deh pon the stretcher,” he added, before noting that he saw blood around her forehead, nose and ears.

The emotional man stated that his wife was a very quiet person and was always helpful to relatives and friends.

The tragedy reopened wounds for Singh, who said that in 2001, his wife and daughter, 6, were involved in an accident along the Albion Public Road, which resulted in the death of the young girl. “She been a come from school and in front the Albion Police Station one car knock them. This is the second time. This is a very sad moment,” he said.

Armogan is survived by her husband and their two sons, who are ages 12 and 24.
