Annandale man dies after struck by bus

An Annandale, East Coast Demerara man died after he was knocked down by a bus on the Good Hope Public Road on Saturday night.

According to information reaching Stabroek News, 36-year-old Imran Khan of Lot 161 Droom Street, Annandale North, was knocked down by  minibus BHH 8465 around 8:30 pm.

Inquiries by the police have disclosed that the minibus was traveling west along the southern carriageway of the Good Hope Public Road when Khan suddenly ran from the southern side of the road and was struck by the left side of the vehicle and fell on the roadway.

Khan’s body was picked up by the driver of the bus, who is a 65-year-old resident of Cherry Lane, Melanie Damishana, and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A breathalyser test was administered to the driver and he passed. However, he is still in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Stabroek News learnt from neighbours and close friends of the man’s family that he was deported from Canada and has only been living in the country for a few years.

Neighbours explained that the majority of the man’s family, including his parents, wife and children are currently residing in Canada.

“He don’t work and he does deh walking up and down the village every day. He does … live a wayward lifestyle and is only cause me and he family good we does take care of he sometimes,” one of the man’s neighbours related.

The neighbour said that the man would visit them every afternoon and they would provide him with food and other sustenance.

 “All of his family outside. His mother, his brothers and sisters and he even got a wife and children out there and is just he alone. He family said that they coming back probably (tonight) if I remember properly,” the neighbour said.
